Frank Hosek

1957 - 1980

Dedication from the 1968 Yearbook

The staff of Bizarre '68 proudly dedicates this Annual to Mr. Frank Hosek, our band leader and instrumental instructor.

Mr. Hosek was born in Czechoslovakia and came to Canada in 1928 at the age of six. He settled in a coal mining district of the Crowsnest Pass and there began his musical education under a noted Swiss violin teacher.

After being awarded Canada's only gold medal in violin following certain examinations, Mr. Hosek was offered a scholarship enabling him to study with the Royal Academy of Music in London. Because the war intervened he went instead to Toronto and studied clarinet, violin and composing under Sir Ernest McMillan who is now President of the Conservatory. He received both his performer's and teacher's certificate.

He later joined the army and while waiting to be sent overseas was chosen for special duty in an all-Canadian army show. In this show, Mr. Hosek worked with such famous personalities as Wayne and Shuster and such musicians as Geoffory Waddington, Bob Farnham and those of the late Jack Kane's orchestra.

Following the war Mr. Hosek settled in Lethbridge, Alberta, to teach music to those people who were formerly unable to receive the benefits of a musical education. During his eleven years in Lethbridge, Mr. Hosek organized five bands and three symphony orchestras in southern Alberta.

During his eleven years in Kamloops Mr. Hosek has striven to produce a fine band annually which will be a credit to the school and to the community. This goal was instilled in him after seeing the fine tradition established by his predecessor, Mr. A. N. McMurdo. He unselfishly gives his time to encourage the band to produce to capacity. He has entered the band in festivals each year and has obtained marks ranging from the high 80's to 95.
