Marian Owens

1954 - 1969

While at Kam High, Marian taught drama and choral music classes, directed an enthusiastic glee club, and directed five Gilbert & Sullivan productions. After Tom Kerr came to Kam High, Marian continued on in musical productions with Tom as artistic director.

When she retired from Kam High in 1969, the K.S.S. Glee Club alumni evolved into the Alumni Singers which in turn became the New Century Singers, Choristers “24” and is at present the Kamloops Choristers directed by Kelvin Barlow.

In the 70’s, Marian was appointed Kamloops District Music Coordinator, and during this time she developed an Elementary Kodaly music program giving Kodaly workshops to teachers throughout the province. Workshops were also given by Marian to B.C. teachers on the B.C. prescribed Holt Reinhart Music Education Series Music Canada.

Marian has been recognized by the Kamloops Business and Professional Womens' club as "Woman of the Year in Fine Arts", and by the Kamloops YM-YWCA "Woman of Distinction" in the Arts.

Described as a “Leading Light” for music in the Interior, Marian received the B.C. Music Educators Distinguished Service Award in 1997. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge one who has made an outstanding contribution to music education in the province.

In 1995, the City acknowledged her for ‘Distinguished Service’. Last year, Marian received the ‘Kent Award’ from the B.C. Choral Federation for long-term involvement in choirs and choral music. Presently, she has organized and is directing about 100 singers in the Choir of the Century for the Kam High Centennial Homecoming.
