John Andrews
 
      

Born in Kamloops, B.C., John Anrews died peacefully on April 23, 2008, in North Vancouver, B.C.

Predeceased by his parents John Ernest Andrews and Cynthia Maria Andrews (nee Robinson); sister-in-law Margaret Steele (nee Payne); and infant son Douglas Reid Andrews. Survived by his wife Doris Deborah Andrews (nee Payne); son William John Andrews, daughter-in-law Merle Zabrack, grandchildren Aaron and Naomi; son Donald Wilfrid Kao Andrews, daughter-in-law Anne Kao Andrews, grandchildren Brett and Alexandra; son Jeffrey Peter Andrews, daughter-in-law Virginia Devonshire, grandchildren Monica, Laura and Georgia; daughter Lorraine Doris Andrews, grandson Graydon; brother William Robinson Andrews, sister-in-law Vips; sister Ella Mary Tait, brother-in-law Howard; sister-in-law Eleanor Humphrey (ne?e Payne), brother-in-law Al Humphrey; and brother-in-law Tom Steele. John also leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces. John Andrews attended Kamloops High School.

In 1947, he received a B.A. in Physics from the University of British Columbia, where he met Dorie, the love of his life. He and Dorie were married on August 28, 1948. After teacher training, they taught at various small schools in communities such as Squamish and Salmon Arm, B.C.

In 1955, they packed up little Billie and Donnie and drove to Chicago, where John received a Ph.D. in the new field of Education Administration from the University of Chicago in 1957. Choosing to return to Canada, they moved to Edmonton, where the arrival of Jeff and Lorraine completed the family.

John was a Professor of Education Administration at the University of Alberta from 1958 to 1965. In 1965, the family moved to Toronto, where John was the Associate Director of the newly formed Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

In 1973, John and Dorie and family returned to their B.C. roots. John was the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia from 1973 to 1980, and remained a Professor there until his retirement as Dean Emeritus in 1985.

John held a deep personal and professional commitment to the public education system both in Canada and around the world. Perhaps John's most inspirational accomplishment was his total devotion to Dorie after she suffered a severe stroke in 1990. Together, Dthey remade their lives, traveled the world, doted on their grandchildren and cared for each other through all that came their way.

George Brown
 
      

George Edward Brown passed away on September 27, 2021 at Overlander Extended Care with his son Dale at his side. He would have been 97 in November.

He was predeceased by his wife Winnifred, 3 babies, his parents, five brothers and a sister. He is survived by his son Dale (Sandra), his seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, Chris (Miranda), Austin (Myra, Emery), Zachary, Natalie (Ruben), Presley, Rachael, Jude, Hannah, Henry, Seamus, Meredith, Philip (Jenna) Eli, Iver, Heather (Peter) Tristan, Everett, Marlena, Janessa, Dominic, Julie, Kimberly (Travis) Parker, Marissa.

George was born in Kamloops on November 23, 1924, served as a wireless telegrapher with the Navy 1942 - 1945 on the HMCS Transcona and HMCS Hespeler. Married Winnifred in Kamloops on June 3, 1950. He and Winnifred ran a General Store in Kitwanga and George moved to various CNR locations where he was employed as Operator, Agent and Dispatcher, retiring in Kamloops as Dispatcher in 1985. They spent a good retirement in Kamloops, then eleven winters in Yuma, AZ. During their retirement many exciting trips in their camper van from Mexico to Yukon Territory, Manitoba and many spots out west as both enjoyed camping and fishing. He received his pilot's licence at 55 and flew more than 500 hours with Winnifred.

He loved oil painting and loved teaching his grandchildren, and left many prints to be remembered by. He also tended his yard and garden with great care. At eighty years old he could be seen in the backyard building an ice rink for his grandchildren. He was so thankful to have Heather and Tristan stay with him after Winn passed. He enjoyed family so much and seeing family even through the window constantly lifted his spirits after Covid lockdowns. His caring warmth, his humour, quick wit, his smile touched so many lives. Even his time at Overlander Extended Care allowed him to leave his fingerprints and heart with many of the caregivers.
