Kam High 1968 - 2001

During my tenure at Kamloops Secondary School 1968-69 and 1979 to 2001 as a teacher, athletic director and coach, I had many occasion to tour our Province and visit many of the large Secondary Schools, with whom we competed on the field, floor and classroom. It was always my impression that Kam High was on an equal footing with all schools in our Province athletically, academically and culturally. Nothing has occurred in the past 33 years to alter my opinion. I recall sitting in many year end assemblies, calculating the amount of money that was being handed out, being amazed at the totals and wondering why, as a student at Kam High, I never saw any of it. My memories are full of outstanding students, teams, athletes and staff. To those who I fail to mention in my allotted page and a half I apologize and claim the infirmities of age. As the motorcycle examiner recently sympathetically told me "Not to worry, balance is one of the first things to go, followed closely by your memory", at least I think that is what he said!

Jack as staff member in 1981What I do remember well, in no particular order: Christmas Assemblies, Snow and the Flakes, Ricky Martin and The Spice Girls, where some of us set new standards of bad taste. I remember Graduation Lotteries, Welcome Breakfasts, awful french toast, apprehensive grade 8's, staff tug-o-war teams who's penchant for letting go of the rope at appropriate times was remarkable. I remember dunk tanks, Pepsi/Coke drinking contests, Indoor Track Meets and Staff Volleyball and Floorhockey teams with Todd Wiseman as the Ringer and McDell as a bad Cloutier. I remember Wilf Schmidt and his year end brunches where we all laughed at ourselves so hard and so long our sides ached for days into the summer. I remember; wandering Norbrock Stadium at football playoff time with thousands of $ in my pockets, P.E. Curling Bonspiels, the 1981 "Birthday Present", and the 1974 Toronto Maple Leafs taking our Dressing Room. I remember Mr. Weatherhead leaving a KASARS Bus parked under the Drive Through at the Coach House Motor Inn, supporting the entire roof for three days, because he had managed to take out a support pillar. I remember Special Olympics for Dan Howe at Overlander School run by grade 12's. I remember 26 years of Red Devil and Red Angel teams, players and people. I remember the honour of teaching and or coaching many offspring of former players and students. I remember proudly watching Nykorak and Olthius and the Red Devils win multiple B.C. Football Championships. I remember watching us get beaten by Notre Dame 78-0. I remember the Fog Bowl in Empire Stadium where we could not see the other side of the field let alone the ball. I remember 22 Red Devil Basketball Teams being competitive with the best our Province had to offer. I remember winning ugly and losing victories. I remember families: the Marchuks, Yamaokas, Balsons, McLaughlins, Gremauds, Harrisons, McDonnels, Bekkerings, Commazettos, McKinnons, Olynyks, Barkers and Karpluks. I remember Homer and Ivana Hamm, Bob Hearn and Summer Basketball Camps. I remember Pat McLaughlin, Rob Stenner, Vic Bifano, Bob Finley, Doug Marchuk, Bernie Ivanco, Tim McDonald, Mike Sabatino, Ted Shukin and Ted Bain. I remember Matt Nelson, Dustin Clark, Jarod Sears, Harold Larsen, Eric Voss, Branden Murdock, Ryan Nelson, Aaron Goddard, Dwight Dick, Scott Leach, Dustin Sanderson, Mark McDonald, Jacquie Hollingshead and Jennifer Choi. In between, I recall: Lindsay Karpluk, Doug Tidball, Mike Leoux, Jim Folk, Homer Hamm, Allan Chappel, Kevin Powell, Harry Thomas, Murray Richter, Brad Balance, Ken Miller, Mario Commazzetto, Tim Dalin, Holger Burke, Mac Gordon, Rick Woldum, Jack Bryson, Mark Balson, Stuart Balson, Doug Balson Shiela Balson, Agnes Balson, Alison Bekkering, Kyle Wood, Todd Wiseman, Rae Robertis and Chicken Catchettori, Del Komarniski, Darren Lincoln, Rick Angeli, Ken Janzen, Ken Sunderland, Mike Dunkley, Matt Sharman, Richie Schley, Reve Harrison, Justin Harrison, Clarence Lai, Stuart Chase, Sean Campbell, Dan Bose, Surj Dhinsa, Jeff Sim, Carlos Whitney, Jason Smylski, Chad Oatway, Neco Cockburn, Rick Ryan, Mark Norman, Blake Foster, Chris Gremaud, Jerry Jack, Graham Nickel, Cory Yamaoka, Randi Yamaoka, Brad Yamaoka, Brandon Bell, Casey Olynyk, Kevin Black, Brad Buckham, Ryan Kazakoff and Aaron Buckham. I remember BCHSBBA Playoff Games against Dawson Creek, Maple Ridge and Cranbrook. I remember Queen Elizabeth and West Vancouver. I remember getting on the wrong B.C. Ferry and ending up at Langdale or some such place which was not Nanaimo. I remember driving a Rugby Team to the Island, missing the last B.C. Ferry and having 40 billets waiting on the other side. That gaffe belonged to Marty Godsmark, potential Administrator. I remember 6 appearances at the BCHSBBA Tournament, 4 Okanagan Championships and 4 Runners up at Okanagan Championships, 1 Cinderella Story and one team which did not get out of the Okanagan but was one of the top four in the Province. I remember Mickey Martino, Russ Chambers and Pat Richardson. I remember a plethora of athletic banquets, athletic banquet programs and a lot of midnight oil. I remember Jennifer and Lee Kiem. I remember a Red Angels Rugby team who taught me a little about heart and enthusiasm and lastly but certainly not least, I remember a wife and family that allowed me to play games most of my adult life, for which I will be eternally thankful and grateful.

I apologize to the many who I suspect I may have overlooked, but time, space and a memory that sometimes can't bring names and faces together accurately as often as I used to, are my extenuating circumstances.

I remember with eternal respect and appreciation: Homer Hamm, Darrell Falk, Lindsay Karpluk, Todd Wiseman, Mark Balson, Darren Lincoln, Mark Zaino, Del Komarniski, Chris Gremaud, Allen Chappel and Corey Yamaoka.

I remember: Sam Dixon, Mike Ledoux and Harry Thomas who are gone, but not forgotten!
