Fred Wismer

Fred Wismer was born in Vancouver April 8, 1948, passed away peacefully Nov 30, 2025 at the Hamlets Westsyde. Predeceased by his parents Chuck Wismer and Josephine (Irwin) Wismer. He is survived by his sister: Dorothy ("Dodie") Patershat, and cousins Patti Hirschberg, Mary McBride, Bruce McBride, David McBride, Lori Morris and Alene Alvord (Utah.) Fred lived and studied for awhile in Vancouver, but his heart was always in Kamloops. He adored his closest family member, his sister Dodie. Many will remember Fred for the many years he drove taxi in Kamloops. He truly enjoyed meeting so many people over the years.

In spite of traumatic childhood events and many challenges, Fred grew into a kind, curious and caring man. His life as a boy was not without adventure some of which invited certain risk. It was often with the participation of his friend Pat Wyse who stayed in touch with Fred over the years and made a point of seeing him whenever he came to town. One example was the time he, with a certain bravado, launched a golf ball from the terrace of their yard in an arc across the street, over the roof top of a neighbour’s house, only to land harmlessly in the garden below. The window of the sunroom of their own house was not as fortunate as an arrow he launched sailed through it to land, to his shock, on their family living room floor. His lifelong love of golf was nurtured by the many happy times he spent golfing with his uncle, Bud Irwin.

Fred was exceptionally humble, with an open heart. He loved to learn, to laugh and believe it or not to sing. This to his embarrassment led to him being coerced by his grade 7 home room teacher to sing on stage in front of a whole school assembly. He was not off key; not a note. Fred had a huge collection of vinyl and enjoyed the music until his passing.

Fred prioritized friendship and connection. One of Fred's favorite quotes was "We are all just walking each other home" (Rumi).
