David Simmons MacKinlay: Jan 13, 1947 – Nov 19, 2018
Dave left us unexpectedly while relaxing on the beach with his dog in Maui after a vigorous doubles tennis match. Born in New Westminster to Kala and Jock MacKinlay, Dave grew up on Pine St. in Kamloops, moving to Vancouver to go to UBC. He got a BA in English, followed by an MA from SUNY Stony Brook, Long Island, with a thesis on Samuel Becket. After a short stint teaching English at Capilano College, Dave entered Law at UBC and was called to the Bar in 1976, beginning a 41-year law practice. Dave was known for his propensity for hard work, his attention to detail, his deep sense of fairness and his devotion to his clients, which persisted after retirement. Dave was a fanatical skier and tennis player, being a member of Jericho Tennis Club and a season’s pass holder at Whistler his entire adult life. In his last 25 days on earth, he played tennis 25 times, while checking the snow reports daily for the upcoming ski season, which he would have been outraged to have missed. Dave also loved golf, swimming, theatre, travel, literature and history, and spending time at the MacKinlay summer house on Shuswap Lake. In retirement Dave and his wife of 30 years, Tracey, divided their time between months in Vancouver, Maui, Whistler, Palm Desert and Salt Spring Island. He is survived by his first wife Adrienne (Jack) Glenn and their sons John and Corin (Lianne) and granddaughter Emilie, and his wife Tracey and their sons Tristan and Devon, as well as brothers Ken (Mo) and Don (Cammi) and their children and grandchildren, and his half-sister Carmen.
