Ian McLaren

Ian McLaren passed away on September 24, 2023. Ian was born in Broughty Ferry Scotland. He immigrated to Vancouver BC in 1951 when he was 6 months old with his parents and older brother. In 1952 the family moved to the Tranquille Sanatorium, where Ian's dad was a surgeon. In 1956 the family moved to Kamloops. Ian's dad became the president of Kamloops Ski Club in 1955 and Tod Mountain Ski Club in 1962; his dad was also the President of Kamloops Tennis Club in 1961. This is how Ian developed his love for tennis, skiing and ski racing. The family started building their cabin at Magna Bay on the Shuswap Lake when Ian was 4. This much-loved cabin is where they spent all their summers, which continues to this day. Ian married Celeste, the love of his life at the Shuswap cabin in August 1993. Amongst his many talents, Ian was an avid tennis player and water skier, learning to bare foot water ski in the early 1970's; he also played hockey, baseball and softball in Kamloops. Ian started ski racing at the age of 8 on Kamloops Ski Hill. He continued to ski race throughout his childhood and adult life, holding the unofficial title of the most wins for an amateur ski racer from Kamloops. He was one of the first to ride the new Burfield Chairlift at Tod Mtn in 1961 with his parents and two brothers. Ian graduated Kam High in 1968. He was still 17 when he first attended Simon Fraser. By 1971, Ian had left university to travel around the world. Ian worked in the ski industry and became a business owner in Kamloops beginning in the 1970's. He opened McSporties in Sun Peaks in 1996, becoming the first independent retailer there. Ian and Celeste moved to Sun Peaks in 2004, where they lived until they returned to Kamloops in 2020. They received the devastating news in the spring of 2016 that, Ian at the age of 65, had dementia and aphasia. They sold McSporties shortly after in October 2016. Ian has been described as being kind, loyal, charismatic and an adventurer, with a great sense of humour that he never lost. He will be remembered as the fun and spontaneous Uncle Coo Coo. Ian's friends and family were extremely important to him. He was one-of-a-kind and very much loved by his family and endless friends. He will be deeply missed by us all. Ian is pre-deceased by his sister-in-law Bonnie in 2010, his mom Patricia in 2012, and his dad William in 2014. Ian is survived by: his wife Celeste, step-daughters Kristin & Alyse; grandchildren Josie, Libbie, Eira and Beau; his brothers Andy and Niall; sister-in-law Dawn; nieces Tricia, Mackenzie (Dylan), Kimberly (Kevin), nephews Craig (Lisa), Brent (Christine), Kirk (Abby), his sister-in-law Alexia (James), their children Brayden (Janelle), Koaddy (Kayla), Joshua (Molly), Mikaya and 15 great-nieces & nephews, his father-in-law Geoffrey & mother-in-law Veroncia, all living in BC. His brother-in-law Todd and family are in Moose Jaw Sask., and his cousins Simon & Gavin and their families are in the UK.

Tony Robertson

A lifelong blues guitarist and purist who was a fixture on the Vancouver and Kamloops music scenes died Friday (December 7, 2012).

Tony Robertson, 62, died from complications of a blood disorder, friends said Sunday.

"He's just one of those guys who played with just about everyone," said local musician and radio personality Henry Small.

"Everyone loved him. He was a gentleman and loved R&B and blues - when it was popular and when it wasn't."

Robertson headed local band Vaqueros, recorded recently with Small's band and toured extensively with Long John Baldry two decades ago.

He grew up on the South Shore, but spent the majority of his professional career in Vancouver, including as a soundman and booking agent at the Yale Hotel, a staple in Vancouver's blues music scene.

His legacy also includes a Kamloops nightclub, Blue Grotto, which grew out of his own volunteer-based Blues Underground Network (BUN) in Kamloops that booked touring acts in venues across the city. Eventually, it found a permanent home at Blue Grotto.

Robertson played with blues icon Baldry throughout the '90s, including touring in Europe.

"I don't think there's anyone from Vancouver in that era who didn't play with him at one time," Small said.

Robertson moved back to Kamloops a decade ago, where he invigorated blues rock and worked tirelessly playing and booking acts.

Friend Rod Duncan said Robertson, a longtime vegetarian, never succumbed to the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, despite his associates and years in the business.

"He was such a sweet guy," Duncan said. "He had an effect on people, not just his music but his personality."

Chris was born Apr 22, 1950 in Kamloops. He was the eldest of 5 brothers and was a great example of sportsmanship and dedication to them. He tolerated his older sister Sandra. Chris had a great love of sports and participated in football, rugby, soccer and track & field. His prowess on the football field led to a scholarship at Walla Walla Community College in Washington state. But the sport he loved best was baseball playing Babe Ruth and senior baseball. While playing with the Kamloops Okonots he was selected to play with Team BC. The award for the best defensive player at the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament is the Chris Swaine Memorial trophy. He was known as a holler guy and someone who always came through in clutch situations. Chris died as a result of a motor vehicle accident on his way to work at Gibraltar Mines. At the time of his passing May 22, 1975 (just one month after his 25th birthday) he was employed as a haul truck operator at Gibraltar Mines near Williams Lake. He never had a chance to see his daughters Daryle and Deborah grow up and give him three beautiful grandsons; Craig, Brennan and Eric. Eric is following in his grandpa's athletic ways. He left behind his wife Jacquie, daughters Daryle & Deborah, sister Sandra Dever and brother Doug, Bill, Les and Andy. A life well lived and far too short.
